So in a couple of the .gifs there’s a banner in the background that appears to say “CHAMPION”

What if that’s relevant to the plot? Like the big bad of the film (Trelane or Harry Mudd or whoever they choose) forces the crew (or parts of it) to compete in a galactic tournament of species or something. And that’s why Spock and Benedict’s character are fighting.
